The Do’s and Don’ts of SEO

Getting your business seen online isn’t easy–but it’s also not impossible. The key to generating traffic on your company page is SEO, or Search Engine Optimization. SEO is a bag of tricks–some black hat, some white hat–that ranks your website increasingly higher on a search engine like Google or Bing. Search engines deploy algorithms and list search results, based on these algorithms. To gain more business, you want your website to rank as high as possible for “keywords” and “search terms” that your customers type in; doing this right takes skills, time, and high-quality content.

Here are some do’s and dont’s for solid SEO.

DO: Diversify your word choice

One of the most important things to remember when writing for Search Engine Optimization is to be diverse in your word choices. You don’t want to start reusing the same keyword over and over; it will make your content redundant and could even result in a Panda Penalty—an audit done by Google that automatically lowers the rank of pages that are over-optimized. So, don’t fear the synonym!

DON’T: Overdo the keywords

Cramming keywords into your content disrupts the flow of your writing and makes it awkward to read. While keywords are important, creating content that is pleasurable and easy to read comes first. So, no keyword stuffing!

DO: Know your audience

With any form of marketing, understanding the target demographic and writing in a voice they understand helps connect businesses with more potential clients. Learn the phrases they use, understand their wants and needs, and be sure that your content conveys the right information so that it can be found easily during an Internet search.

DON’T: Be boring

Don’t be afraid to be conversational. Flat, boring text will lose your reader’s attention quickly. Feel free to spread your writer’s wings and use words that will evoke emotion and hook the reader.

DO: Choose a focus keyword

A key SEO strategy is to choose a focus keyword and balance it throughout the content. While the use of synonyms is important to keep your text engaging, you should be able to work at least one core keyword into your content multiple times. Try to distribute the word evenly so that it isn’t squeezed into a few lines, but still appears enough to drive up traffic.

DON’T: Use long sentences or paragraphs

Be sure to avoid long sentences or paragraphs with too many lines. Making your page easy to find is one thing, but organized content is what makes viewers stick around. Limit your lines to 15-20 words, and instead of using one big paragraph with several different ideas, include subheadings to keep things clean.
